A recap of the day's activities:
WORD OF THE DAY
Snapper. As in, the Seahawks have a new one. Well, actually, an old one, as Jeff Robinson was signed to replace Tim Lindsey.
Lindsey injured his back in the team's preseason game against the San Diego Chargers on Monday night and was released. He had been filling in for Tyler Schmitt, the team's sixth-round draft choice who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with an existing back injury that the club was not aware of when he was drafted.
Robinson, 38, was signed at midseason last year when the club was having problems with its snapping.
The situation with Schmitt does not sound good.
"I mean, it's pretty bad," coach Mike Holmgren said.
Career-threaten bad? "I don't know," said Holmgren, who's 60. "He's a young man, and he's got a back like mine. It's not good."
PLAYER OF THE DAY
Mike Wahle. The veteran left guard was showing just why the Seahawks jumped at the opportunity to sign him after his release by the Carolina Panthers in February.
On back-to-back plays during the padless, 85-minute practice, Wahle walled off linebacker D.D. Lewis to give T.J. Duckett a lane up the left side and then pulled to the right side to give Justin Forsett an escort on the screen pass.
Later, Wahle had the block on linebacker Leroy Hill to spring Forsett on the screen pass to the left side.
PLAYS OF THE DAY
Offense: Rookie tight end John Carlson had a pair of end zone catches.
Defense: Rookie middle linebacker David Hawthorne slapped away a Dalton Bell pass that was intended for tight end Joe Newton.
Special teams: Veteran Olindo Mare and rookie Brandon Coutu recovered from having field goal attempts fall short into a stiff wind to nail their next kicks.
INJURY REPORT
Lofa Tatupu's has a bone bruise in his right knee and the Pro Bowl middle linebacker will be able to play in the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Bills in Buffalo, Holmgren said.
Tatupu and No. 3 QB Charlie Frye had MRIs on Tuesday after injuring knees against the Chargers. Frye is expected to play in Friday night's preseason finale against the Oakland Raiders at Qwest Field.
Neither practiced.
Also sitting out was defensive tackle Craig Terrill, who had a sore back.
Still sidelined: quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (back), wide receivers Deion Branch (knee) and Bobby Engram (shoulder), offensive linemen Sean Locklear (knee) and Samuel Gutekunst (back) and defensive lineman Chris Cooper (hamstring).
With Tuesday's roster cut to 75 and nine players sitting out, only 67 players practiced – and five of them were special teams-only players. Coutu was back after being sidelined with a sore groin.
QUOTE UNQUOTE
"Hasselbeck said he tried to pick up an amp. So I told him I've never been more disappointed in a player in my whole life." – Holmgren, on the injury to Terrill, who also plays the guitar and sings

Coach Mike Holmgren will address Lofa Tatupu's knee injury after practice this afternoon.
But the unofficial word is that the MRI that was done Tuesday showed nothing more than what was announced, and obvious, after the game Monday night -- it's bruised, and it's sore.
From Olympian Sue Bird to ironman Chris Gray.
The Seahawks' recently retired offensive lineman (Gray, not Bird) will throw out the first pitch at the Mariners game this afternoon.
Gray holds the franchise record for consecutive games started, but was forced to announce his retirement this month because of a back injury.
The Seahawks only released two players – former UW cornerback Omare Lowe and wide receiver Joel Filani – in reaching the league-mandated 75-man roster limit this afternoon.
The other three moves involved injured players. Rookie snapper Tyler Schmitt (back) and offensive tackle Will Robinson (ankle) were placed on injured reserve, while second-year linebacker Will Herring was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list.
With Schmitt and Herring out for the season, it means Tim Lindsey and David Hawthorne likely earn spots on the 53-man roster.
Lindsey was re-signed after Schmitt injured his back. Hawthorne has played his way onto the roster with a solid performance in training camp and the preseason games. Herring has been having tests to determine the cause of his slow recovery from injuries.
The roster must be trimmed to 53 by Saturday.
The team actually has 76 players, because German offensive lineman Samuel Gutekunst will be with the team all season but not count against the roster limit as part of the NFL's international development program.
Not that it's helping right now, because he's out with a herniated disc.
My flight is boarding, and still no word on the Seahawks cut. They say they're still awating clearance from club president Tim Ruskell to announce them.
Here's one take on the NFC West from Howie Long, the Hall of Fame defensive end for the Oakland Raiders and now an analyst for Fox:
On St. Louis: "Bad year [last year], 3-13. They had a lot of problems on offense and a lot of problems on defense pretty much across the board. In my mind, Marc Bulger is a very good quarterback, very accurate, can really throw the football. Hard to throw the football when you're under siege which he was last year and I think in great part, the reason for that is the injuries in the offensive line and that started with the loss of Orlando Pace at the beginning of the season. That had kind of a ripple effect in their protection and then subsequently in their run game and then Marc Bulger taking a beating. It's interesting, they've brought in Al Saunders to run the offense and Scott Linehan being an offensive coach can now focus more on being the head coach. Well I feel like they can have a better defensive front, front 7. Obviously they drafted my son with the #2 pick. He's the rookie. As coaches mentioned yesterday, rookies tend to have peaks and valleys, as he is in the process of having right now."
On San Francisco: "…Frank Gore is a very physical, gifted back, coming off of an injury at the end of the season last year. Interestingly, Marshall Faulk went down to Florida and spent a great deal of time going over the Mike Martz offense with him…Defensively they are very physical, very tough. Patrick Willis is a rising star in the league, had an immediate impact for them. Manny Lawson who I enjoyed watching at NC State is coming back from an injury and they bring in Justin Smith. They like their secondary."
On Arizona: "Arizona is a team that started to rise last year. Obviously they have a quarterback situation there with Matt Leinart and Kurt Warner. Warner still has something left in his tank. He's very intelligent. They want Matt Leinart to be the guy and I think this is kind of a seminal year for him. Edgerrin James is still running effectively. I think for the first time in a number of years, their offensive line returns in tact. Defensively, Clancy Pendergast is one of the more gifted coordinators in the league and I like what they do defensively."
On Seattle: "It's an interesting dynamic there with Mike Holmgren having announced that it's his final year. Was that a decision that he made? Was it an organizational decision? His successor is in place in Jim Moore Jr. (sic; it's Mora, no Jr.) and that in and of itself is an interesting dynamic. Matt Hasselbeck is there, one of the top tier quarterbacks in the league and they spent a lot of money on Julius Jones. Some people say that's a good investment, some not. Time will tell…Defensively, it's as talented a group as Mike Holmgrem has had in Seattle but as I mentioned, perception within the division, maybe optimistically, is that Seattle might be coming down to the pack and that Arizona might be ready to challenge and if you're going to make a run as a lower tier team in a division, it would be the division to do that."
Middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu is out with a bruised knee. He has been replaced by D.D. Lewis
